What began as a dream has grown into a cherished Encinitas tradition.
Hilcias "Kia" Garcia immigrated to the United States in 1970 with a strong work ethic, determination, and a vision for a better future. After working a variety of jobs, he found success in the wholesale grocery industry, where he built relationships with store owners, distributors, and industry professionals who helped shape his understanding of the business.
Inspired by his love for authentic Mexican cuisine and the traditions he grew up with, Kia founded El Nopalito in 1983. His vision was simple: create a place where families could enjoy fresh, authentic Mexican food and find the quality ingredients needed to prepare traditional meals at home.
More than 40 years later, that vision continues to guide everything we do. From our handmade corn tortillas and family recipes to our neighborhood market, we remain committed to sharing the flavors, culture, and hospitality that have made El Nopalito a favorite for generations.

El Nopalito Tortilla Factory Market & Restaurant has been a beloved, family-owned Encinitas tradition for more than 40 years, serving authentic Mexican cuisine, freshly made tortillas, and a true neighborhood market experience.
Every morning, we prepare our signature corn tortillas from scratch. Stop by early to enjoy them hot off the line, or take home fresh corn masa to make your own tortillas and favorite family recipes.
Our market is stocked with everything you need for an authentic Mexican meal, including homemade tortilla chips, fresh meats and seafood, Mexican cheeses, fresh nopalitos, ready-made sopes, corn husks for tamales, dried chiles, spices, and a variety of house-made salsas and fresh guacamole.
Our restaurant features traditional Mexican favorites made from family recipes, including pollo en mole, costillas de puerco en salsa verde con nopales, barbacoa, and other classic dishes, all served with rice, beans, and our fresh handmade corn tortillas. Be sure to visit our salsa bar, offering a selection of fresh salsas along with pickled carrots and jalapeños to customize every meal.
